Irish Soda Bread

Happy St Patty’s day to all!

I can’t think of a better recipe to share than this essential loaf that my Mom has made every year as far back as I can remember. It’s simple, unbelievably tasty and perfect for sopping up any traditional Irish celebrating you may partake in.

Whether you pair it with your corned beef dinner or a night of celebration, this wonder bread of sorts is an absolute delight. Its fast, easy and perfectly hearty.


Recipe: Moms Irish Soda Bread


  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 tbl sugar
  • 1 tbl caraway seeds
  • 1/2 cap raisins
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 350F.
Mix flour, baking powder, salt, sugar caraway seeds and raisins until well incorporated.Stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough.

Dry Ingredients

Knead dough on a floured surface for one minute. If the dough is sticky add more flour, too dry add a little more buttermilk.  Dough will be soft, smooth and pull away from surface easily. Sharp into round load and place into an eight inch greased baking dish (a pie pan will work fine).

Cut an X into the top of the loaf and bake for 45 minutes. Loaf will be firm and golden brown.
